Amal Clooney received the 2018 Global Citizen of the Year Award 05.12.2018

Amal and George Clooney showed up in New York for the 70th Anniversary of the UN Correspondents Association. Amal was there to receive the 2018 UNCA Global Citizen of the Year Award for her humanitarian work, and George there to cheer her on.

Amal has been involved with the UN since 2013. During the event, she took to the stage to honor the best of UN media coverage in 2018. Per People, she said, “I am here tonight to honor you, the journalists being recognized for your groundbreaking reporting this year.”

Amal Clooney, who has represented journalists detained in countries like Egypt and Azerbaijan, linked Trump’s rhetoric about the media to the killing of the Washington Post journalist.

Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Leaked accounts of his murder say that the killing lasted seven minutes and he was suffocated. Turkish investigators reportedly believe that Khashoggi’s remains may have been dissolved in acid.

“The US president has given such regimes a green light and labeled the press in this country the enemy of the people,” she said.

“And of course two months ago a Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, walked into a consulate in Istanbul and was brutally tortured to death.”

Trump has repeatedly referred to the press as the enemy of the people and has embraced chants against news outlets at his rallies.

  1. So, I listened to Amal’s complete speech and would like to comment. Amal said in so many words that Trump is connected with the death of Jamal Khashoggi, She used the phrase “green light”. That is absurd and a remarkably dangerous thing to suggest. Trump has been railing about the press for a long time. He goes after whomever reports something he doesn’t like. But,Trump is correct in bringing the topic of lack of quality in journalism to the table.Recently journalists themselves have begun discussing this topic. Mr,Khashoggi was killed two months ago and neither Amal nor the Clooney Foundation made any statement at all condemning this. And, although she specifically criticized the current US President in her speech, she made no mention of heads of state of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, China etc, that routinely arrest & torture journalists. For her to call out Trump who at the most has banned a CNN reporter from the WH briefings and not call out the true scoundrels really says a lot about her and it is not good. I also have to say that a good deal of her speech included listing all of her cases; she appeared to be using this opportunity as a commercial for her work. Lastly, in the same video that contained her speech there was extensive film of her talking with the UN Sec Gen. Amal turns her back to George and ignores him for a long time-when this happens, the look on George’s face is priceless-and Amal continues to focus on the Sec. Gen. who actually looks bored!

    1. Jamie, I agree with all your comments! Regarding the video, it’s bizarre how Amal totally turns her back to George for a very, very long time, flipping her hair and going on on and on…She didn’t even think to include him in the conversation. She is so caught up in ther own fame. There is no way this in not affecting their relationship. He looks sad.

      1. Yes, I saw that portion of the video too. I think Amal is used to being flirty with men and expects them to fawn over her. I don’t think she knows how to interract with a man without being “on.” She definitely seemed … very conscious of the cameras on her and engaging with the UN Secretary General. I might be in a minority, but I don’t understand her appeal. Does it mean that beautiful means: tall, thin with thick hair? Other than that, I find her to have a very masculine face and don’t find her particularly attractive. I think she is very charming, smart and confident and that attracts men. I dunno. Nati probably won’t even publish this but I was curious what others thought of her….

    2. Can someone please post a link to the video that everyone is posting about? I agree that Amal poses a lot for the camera. In general, her hair, makeup, and jewelry look overdone for this event. It’s not a Hollywood awards show, but it looks like she wants it to be one, or maybe a beauty pageant.

      1. I agree that the fashion piece is very important to her, but I am increasingly thinking that a lot of what is going on with her is more related to a possible goal of a top position at the UN.

  2. I have a question and am wondering if you Nati, others can respond. I noticed that there is an “official” Facebook page for Amal. The page even has links to her law office and the Clooney Foundation. Does anyone know if this really is “official” and when the page was set up? Thanks.
